    THAI&WHY

Connecting people with local life through language and culture.

We practice language, share experiences, and discover the "why" behind everyday communication and culture.

This Week’s Topic: WHAT DO WE “KRENG JAI” ABOUT?

For our first session, we're exploring Kreng Jai, one of those Thai words with no clean English translation. Sometimes it's politeness. Sometimes it's respect. Sometimes it's just complicated.

Thai people use it when they don't want to inconvenience someone, ask for too much, create an obligation, or make another person uncomfortable. We might want to say no to an offer but say yes, because we don't want the other person to feel bad, and then we feel bad about accepting.

Or someone says ไม่เป็นไร / mai pen rai ("it's okay"), but is it really okay?

    In this session, we'll explore:

-Is kreng jai simply being polite?

-Is it consideration? Respect? Not wanting to impose?

-Why doesn't spending money make kreng jai go away?

-Does your culture have something similar?

Through fun scenarios, conversations, and real-life examples, we'll look at how kreng jai works in everyday Thai life, including accepting kindness, asking for favors, paying for dinner, talking with elders, and visiting someone's home.

    You'll leave with:

-Useful Thai phrases for accepting, declining, and asking politely

-A better sense of what Thai people really mean (and don't say)

-New friends, both local and international

No Thai needed. No English needs to be perfect.

Come curious, share your own culture, and don't be afraid to ask why.
